Minors
The Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences offers two minors.
- Minor in Family, Youth and Community Sciences
- Minor in Organizational Leadership for Nonprofits.
Minor in Family, Youth and Community Sciences
A minor in Family, Youth and Community Sciences (FYCS) helps to prepare students for rewarding careers in professions that strengthen families, children, youth and communities. This minor can support students majoring in:
- Education
- Sociology
- Psychology
- Business Administration
- Health Professions
- Communication
- Religion
- Human Nutrition
- Anthropology
- Political Science
- Urban Planning
- Criminology
Students can earn a minor in FYCS by completing 15 credit hours of courses including:
FYC 3001 Intro to Family, Youth and Community Sciences
FYC 3101 Parenting and Family Development
FYC 3201 Foundations of Youth Development
FYC 3401 Intro to Social and Economic Perspectives on the Community
One additional approved course
Minor in Organizational Leadership for Nonprofits
The nonprofit sector of the economy is growing and career opportunities are increasing for careers in social services, health services, education, natural resources and community development. This minor develops professional competencies in leadership and management that prepare students to work in nonprofit and government agencies and other community-based organizations. The nonprofit minor meets the requirements of the American Humanics certification program.
The minor requires 17 credit hours of coursework; 11 hours are chosen from core courses (including 2 hours of approved internship work) and 6 hours are chosen from approved electives.
