Other Miscellaneous Information and Policies

 Learning Environment

The learning environment will be based on mutual respect, open discussion, sharing of ideas and thoughts on contemporary youth problems based on thorough research of the topic, including gathering sufficient data and expert analysis, reviewing written materials leading to an understanding of the problem, identifying goals to address the problem, intense and thorough thinking, and reasoned choice. Discussions between the instructor and students and between and among students will be non-critical, information sharing, non-confrontational and without profanity. The instructor will end any discussion that becomes a personal attack or affront or is too disruptive, opinionated or argumentative. Group work must be cooperative and collaborative. Cell phones, beepers, or other personal electronic devices may not be used during instructional time. Failure to adhere to any part of this policy will result in a student being asked to withdraw from the course.

 Late Assignments.

Late assignments will only be accepted with documentation of excused absence (see page 3 of syllabus for a complete list of acceptable excused absences) or with the approval of the instructor in advance of the deadline.  This means it is YOUR responsibility to submit assignments on WebCT before the due date on the assignment.  Occasionally, the system goes down, is slow, or is uncooperative.  We understand this; however, please be sure to submit assignments on WebCT early to avoid this problem.  Do not wait until minutes or seconds before the due date only to have a problem. Should you have a problem with WebCT, you may contact the WebCT support staff to document your time/date of problem.

All web/ct contact info is on the website: http://lss.at.ufl.edu/

Contact with Instructor and Teaching Assistant

Preferred means of contact for quick questions is via email to either the instructor or the teaching assistant. Office hours are available for more in-depth discussions. Telephone calls are welcome at the office during office hours. Phone calls to the instructor or TA at home are not appropriate.

As a result of the registration form at the University of Florida, every student has signed the following statement: “I understand that the University of Florida expects its students to be honest in all their academic pursuits. I agree to adhere to this commitment to academic honesty and understand that my failure to comply with this commitment may result in discipline action up to and including expulsion from the University.” All assessments taken on WebCT must be completed without notes and closed book by individual students. Any violation of this is considered a violation of the Honor Code.
