About Dr. Smith
Dr. Smith teaches graduate and undergraduate courses pertaining to family life. Her courses emphasize family resiliency and community supports for families going through hard times. She also has served as undergraduate coordinator of the growing undergraduate program in FYCS; and led the planning committee for the new graduate program. She advises many undergraduate and graduate students, and was recognized for this work in 1999. She serves on many committees in the University and community.
In 2003 and 2004, Dr. Smith led a team of FYCS faculty to develop a new radio program on family life, Family Album Radio (WUFT/FM and satellite). As Executive Producer, she coordinates the overall development of this weekday show, including script writing, public relations materials, web site development, and external funding requests. The program was recognized with the Grant Prize IMAGE award in 2005.
In addition to the radio program, Dr. Smith participates in other outreach activities through the UF/Florida Cooperative Extension Service. Currently she is working on publications related to aging and caregiving and divorce. Dr. Smith’s international work has included research and training programs in Korea, Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Haiti, as well as coursework on global issues with international and domestic students and faculty at UF. She co-authored the second edition of Families in Multicultural and Global Perspective, published by Sage in 2005. Dr. Smith holds a Ph.D. in Child and Family Development, a Master's Degree in Social Work and a B.A. in Sociology. She is a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE), as awarded by the National Council on Family Relations.
