Florida Residency
Students often want to become Florida residents to lower tuition costs. All U.S. citizens and resident aliens are eligible to apply for Florida residency. Failure to apply for residency can result in ineligibility for some financial aid, including department-funded assistantships. If interested, students should start the application process immediately upon arrival in Florida because residency normally cannot be obtained until the student has resided in the state for approximately one year.
If you are interested in establishing your Florida residency, on arrival in Gainesville, you should pick up the Request for Change in Residency Status form in the Registrar's Office, S222 Criser Hall so that you will know what you must do to become a resident. Also immediately file the Declaration of Domicile form at the Official Records Office, Room 101, Alachua County Administrative Building (corner of University Avenue and Main Street), and keep the receipt, which you must submit with your Change in Residency Status application. You should immediately obtain a Florida driver's license and relinquish drivers' licenses from other states, register your vehicle in Florida, and obtain a Florida voter I.D. card. Keep copies of receipts of utility deposits, rental agreements and other documentation proving residency. Retain proof of any employment, particularly employment unrelated to the University of Florida.
