Financial Aid
The department offers a limited number of assistantships, awarded on a competitive basis. To apply for an assistantship, complete and return the Application for Graduate Fellowship or Assistantship and mail it to us with your other documentation. Students awarded these assistantships receive a stipend and tuition waivers. Some faculty members also have grant-funded assistantships for graduate students. These assistantships also provide a stipend and tuition waiver.
Many graduate students support themselves through part time employment at UF. In addition, individual faculty members in the department are often aware of positions available in other departments. These may be grant-funded or more permanent positions.
There are a few university-wide fellowships awarded on a highly competitive basis. The Graduate Coordinator nominates outstanding students who have already been accepted, but not yet enrolled, in our department for these fellowships.
Some fellowships are restricted to minorities, such as African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Native Americans and Native Alaskans (Eskimo or Aleuts). For more information about these opportunities, check with the Office of Graduate Minority Programs.
A number of small scholarships, usually ranging from $500 to $2,000, are awarded from endowment funds at the University. Most of these are awarded on the basis of scholarship and service to the department and community. Some examples include the Dickinson, Herlong, Mulrennan, Madelyn Lockhart, Agricultural Women's Club, Kendall and New American awards.
Most assistantships are 1/3-time or ½-time. Recipients of 1/3-time assistantships are obligated to work 13.3 hours per week at whatever assignment they are given. Students holding ½-time assistantships are obligated to work 20 hours per week. Stipends for department-funded assistantships are determined by the Graduate Coordinator. Stipends for grant-funded assistantships are determined by the faculty member who holds the grant.
